ABOUT
The Special Service Area (SSA) is an economic development tool that allows additional real estate property taxes to be levied to fund added services for a defined area, under the City of Chicago's Department of Planning and Development. The services funded through the SSA #52 tax, which pertains to 51st Street, are in addition to services generally provided by the City of Chicago. These services benefit those properties that are located within the boundaries of the SSA.
COMMISSIONERS
Mayoral-appointed SSA Commissioners for each SSA district oversee and recommend the annual services, budget and Service Provider Agency to the City.
The SSA #52 Commissioners and the community participate in a yearly planning session to determine the activities for the SSA funds

SSA #52 meets with the Commissioners and community on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, after the General Meeting.
All SSA #52 meetings are held at 2:30 P.M. at the office of the 51st Street Business Association, located at 220 E. 51st Street.

PROGRAMS
- Advertising & Promotion
- SSA #52 is one of the sponsors of the yearly "Start The Music, Stop The Violence summer community festival.
- SSA #52 in collaboration with the 51st Street Business Association, HOYCE Youth Center and Toys for Tots has a yearly toy give-away to 100 youth in the Grand Boulevard and Washington Park community.
- SSA #52 assists local businesses in promoting their businesses in the local and neighboring communities.
- Public Way Maintenance
- SSA #52 hires low income and CHA residents to assist with maintenance of the 51st Street Corridor.
- Public Way Aesthetics
- SSA #52 has sponsored a community Christmas Tree and decorations for the holiday season on the 51st Street business strip.
- Facade & Interior Improvements
- SSA #52 sponsors a facade improvement program for businesses. An application is given to businesses to apply for grant funding to assist in replacing or installing awnings or roll down shutters, to assist in our rehabilitation and beautification project on 51st Street.
- Safety Programs
- SSA #52 works closely with the Chicago Police Department and the CAPS program to assist in the safety and security of the 51st street corridor.
